The Library

“Elian was skilled at constructing compound searches that each benefited from the previous step in a logically precise manner. This required knowledge of how and where the information was saved and learning the organization of the archive was a major component of his education. For Elian, the light at the end of the tunnel was something he imagined concretely before taking step 1 in a search. Never losing sight of that end, the light grew bigger with each successive inquiry until the search was concluded.”
In Harmonia's society, Librarians hold a position of considerable prestige and authority. In this novel, they join engineers, housing workers, and medical personnel as unsung heroes who benefit humanity. In his role as a public servant, Elian is focused on aiding citizens in conducting searches on topics of diverse interest. Scientica expresses considerable interest in Elian's aptitude for synthesizing evidence through systematic search results, seeking to understand and emulate his proficiency. Elian becomes a key player in helping solve the riddle of what Scientica has in mind for people. He is dedicated to the motto of the Library, “Information is for Use,” which is an homage to the laws of library science proposed by Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan in 1931, which have been revised for use in the world of Harmonia.
